In today's world, finding a natural and effective sunscreen can be challenging. Many commercial sunscreens contain harmful chemicals that can irritate the skin and harm the environment. Enter tallow-based sunscreen—a natural, nourishing alternative that offers sun protection without the synthetic additives. This DIY tallow-based sunscreen recipe combines the moisturizing properties of tallow with the sun-blocking power of zinc oxide to give you a safe and effective sun care solution.
Pro-Mom Tip!
With 2 little boys, it's hard to keep track of who needs more sunscreen, and when. That's why I LOVE these NATPAT Sunny Patch UV Detection Stickers that take all of the guesswork out of when to re-apply sunscreen!
Why Choose Tallow-Based Sunscreen?
Before we jump into the recipe, let's explore why tallow is a fantastic base for sunscreen.
- Deep Moisturization: Tallow is rich in fatty acids and vitamins that deeply moisturize and nourish the skin.
- Skin Compatibility: The composition of tallow is similar to the lipids found in human skin, making it highly compatible and easily absorbed.
- Natural and Non-Toxic: Tallow is a natural ingredient free from synthetic chemicals, making it gentle on the skin and safe for the environment.
- Zinc Oxide for Sun Protection: This mineral provides broad-spectrum UV protection without the harmful effects of chemical sunscreens.
DIY Tallow-Based Sunscreen Recipe
This DIY tallow-based sunscreen is easy to make and provides excellent sun protection while keeping your skin soft and hydrated.
Ingredients:
- 2 oz Grass-Fed Beef Tallow: Opt for high-quality, grass-fed tallow for the best results.
- 2 oz Coconut Oil: Coconut oil adds additional moisture and has natural SPF properties.
- 2 oz Shea Butter: Shea butter is deeply nourishing and helps to protect the skin.
- 1oz Beeswax: if possible, use local and/or organic!
- 3 oz Liquid Oil: I used a combination of carrot seed, raspberry leaf and jojoba oil.
- 2.5 oz Non-Nano Zinc Oxide: Zinc oxide is the active ingredient that provides sun protection. Make sure it’s non-nano to avoid absorption into the skin.
- 20 drops essential oil: Lavender oil soothes the skin and adds a calming fragrance, but you can really use any oil you'd like...just avoid those EO's that can be photosensitizing, like citrus based oils.
Instructions:
-
Melt the Base Ingredients:
- In a double boiler, melt the tallow, coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax together over low heat until they are fully combined and liquid.
-
Add the Zinc Oxide:
- After allowing the mixture to cool a bit, carefully stir in the zinc oxide powder. Be cautious not to inhale the powder; you can wear a mask for added safety. Mix thoroughly to ensure even distribution.
-
Add Essential Oils:
- Remove the mixture from heat and allow it to cool slightly. Stir in the carrot seed and lavender essential oils.
-
Pour and Set:
- Pour the mixture into a clean, airtight container. Let it cool at room temperature until it solidifies.
How to Use:
- Application: Apply a generous amount of the tallow-based sunscreen to your skin before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
- Storage: Store the sunscreen in a cool, dark place to maintain its effectiveness and prevent melting.
Want an even easier way to DIY your own sunscreen? You can actually use our Baby Butta or our Body Butta as a base and simply add in Zinc Oxide to create your own sunscreen! Simply melt the Butta down in a glass container, add and mix the recommended amount of ZO to the oil, and allow it to re-solidify. And VOILA, you've got your very own sunscreen!
2oz jar- 0.5oz zinc oxide
There are lots of differing opinion on the internet, but we think it's safe to say that using this 20% concentration of Zinc Oxide in your sunscreen will result in approx. a SPF of 30.
